The Good:
- Cillian Murphy's character was amazing as Jackson Rippner. He did a great job in playing dual personalities. The transformation from one personality to the next was almost flawless. He played a calm and collected person at one moment then transformed into a serious and calculated operative the next.
- The pacing of the movie was good. They didn't drag any scenes out and each scene flowed together well.
- Rachel McAdams's Lisa character did a great job as the lead in this film. Lisa spent every moment on that plane trying to outsmart Jackson.
- She tried to fake the phone call to the hotel but got caught.
- The message on the bathroom mirror was a decent attempt at getting to someone.
- Writing the letter in the book she gave to the elderly lady was another decent attempt.
- She stole a pen from the kid sitting in the next isle. This one worked well in her favor.
The Bad:
Lisa's attempts to get messages out to people really felt like a waste. Anyone who's competent at their hostage taking job would know how to counteract each one of Lisa's messages. They could have put a little more ingenuity into the attempts.
The incompetency of the minor characters in this film would make you shake your head. The one that stands out the most is the hit man stationed at the dad's house was awful. He really needed to find a different profession. It felt like the hit man was just a plot device to introduce a knife and gun into the final scenes of the movie.
The traveling ability of Jackson to the house seemed a bit confusing. He wasn't in front of Lisa at all and she stole a car in order to get home quickly. Jackson was stopped at the terminal transfer. He should have taken a bit longer to reach the house under these circumstances. Guess it was movie magic.
Jackson was easily defeated by the combination of Lisa and her dad. This left you to think how Jackson would succeed during the beginning of the film. He showcased a few skills while wielding the knife and unfortunately it didn't help him much against Lisa.
The Hypothetical:
It would be a different movie if Charles Keefe decided to take his security guard's advice and switch hotels. Instead of Lisa worrying about their safety she could spend all of her efforts trying to reach her dad so that he could call the cops. The incompetent hit man would go to jail all before she got home. Maybe Lisa could even try to get Jackson arrested and kill two birds with one stone.
Question of the week: What would you have done differently than Lisa?
